TCAF is this weekend! You can find me on the 2nd floor at table #262, which is at the east end of the room opposite the windows (and near the exit). I’ll be sitting next to Faith Erin Hicks! How cool is that? I recommend all her stuff, but if you need a place to start, try Friends With Boys.
Also! Sunday from 12:15 to 1:15, at the nearby Pilot Tavern, I will be on a panel in which we will discuss Worldbuilding (no link yet, but I’m sure it’ll be up on the TCAF site soon). This panel will feature Mike Maihack (Cleopatra in Space), Noelle Stevenson (Nimona), Seth (Palookaville), and me. If you won’t be able to come but have questions, let me know and I’ll try to answer them here as a warm-up.
If you are coming to TCAF, you may wish to make use of their handy app.
Hope to see you there!
It’s not a pattern. In Galaxion’s first jump, a whole lot of energy just vanished when they changed universes. With the second jump, a whole lot of energy suddenly appeared – at least it didn’t fry the crew. Maybe the power structure worked as lightning rod?
That is indeed an interesting observation!
I don’t think the energy just “stayed” at the original location, waiting to get reconnected in the second jump.
Maybe physics is little different in the other universe? Some constant is slightly off and suddenly, your main engine gives you less energy after first jump (which you compensate), and then suddenly gives more energy after second jump (for which you didn’t have time to compensate)
I like how the emergency suit bunches on Fusella’s arms. Great detail there.
Looks like a right mess down there.
Aaaaaaand that killed the lighthearted banter. Let’s just hope the banter is *all* that it killed…
Never forget… The universe is huge and it is always trying to kill us…
Of course if we are dealing with ‘The Multi-verse’ the same still applies but in higher degrees of order.
Yeah….get the feeling Fusella will be asking for the keys back to her ship pretty soon after this latest debacle…
Actually that may be a plot point. The General was all “I have command for the duration of the mission” before. So she might well insist on retaining command until they have finished working out what went wrong and safely made it back to base.
Hopefully, Nelson will refuse. Fusella is incompetent.
This came out wrong. No, Fusella isn’t incompetent. But I don’t see in what way Fusella being in control would change anything to the situation. If anything, the thoughts both had while they came to the engine room.
Fusella: Angry, whining, angry at everyone from Nelson to TerSA to the Jump Engine and right up to herself. Its an emotional moment that serves no purpose but to vent, and in the end is in no way useful to anyone else in fixing the problem.
Scavina: Worried about the damage, but cool-headed. Doesn’t even attempt to assign blame, instead focusing on what could have gone wrong. This is much better. This is constructive. Its a pointless waste of time and energy, getting angry. Trying to understand a problem is the best way to solve it.
Fusella is someone I’d like to have with me to talk and to unwind. Scavina, however, is someone I’d like to have with me when something nasty happens. Right now, she should stay in command. She’s much better suited for this.
