If, unlike Darvin and Alex, you don’t happen to recall the near-disastrous systems failure with lots of explosions, you can read the story of the Pathfinder’s Jump.
Actually, it was in this same short story where Zan hints at the reason why the Nelson Project (AKA the Jump Engine Project) was moved from Interplanetary Patrol vessels to the Galaxion (which is what Darvin is referring to here). I may have also brought this factoid up somewhere else in the comic, but right now I can’t find it! Do let me know if you remember reading something like that.
“Watch who you’re calling irregular, buster!”
Who, or what?
Yes, the Pathfinder had explosions. Does that mean it would’ve gone the same place as Hiawatha and Galaxion, if the feedback loop hadn’t have been an issue? But the Hiawatha exploded a lot, and *it* worked. So I seem to be contradicting myself…
Still liking that colorized Pathfinder scene.
Insectoid, with regard to who or what, I think it’s a matter of perspective. Most ships are personified, aren’t they, especially by their captains? I’m sure Fu means “who” and that she is referring to Galaxion.
Since I have an inside track on what is actually going on here, I will stay my fingers from the keyboard and enjoy the rampant speculation going on.
IIRC, the Old Edition Graphic Novel has more clues to what happened to the Pathfinder. Sadly, it isn’t available online
You can always pay $18 to get a copy if you cannot bear to hang on to the edge of your seat any longer
I figured the mechanism was that the engine pushed Pathfinder about halfway through to another dimension, but the engine gave out mid-way, and the “positional energy” was spent on moving the ship, like hang-gliding from a high place.
The Galaxion, on the other hand, had enough energy to snap through the “ceiling”, and found itself standing in the exact same spot – but in another dimension.
Heh, it’s funny seeing flashbacks in color when the original comic pages weren’t. XD
Zan mentions here that everything onboard Galaxion is bigger than it needs to be.
The shocking twist: The Pathfinder did take them to a different dimension. It’s just that the only difference between the Pathfinder’s dimension and their home is that the Virgo supercluster is 5 parsecs to the left.
Like the colorized Pathfinder scene background, and also that last big panel which lets us see Darvin’s big blues…
Elaborate’s explanation makes an odd kind of sense. But I also really like bob000′s — Pathfinder _did_ shift, just less than Galaxion. Pathfinder wasn’t home when they thought they were. Which means… Darvin isn’t Fu’s Darvin…
Slightly off-topic but — when will Book 3 be released? Even a guestimate would be welcome. Inquiring fanboys and fangirls want to know. Thanks.
I’m hoping for sometime soon! The book is done, but because we wanted to fund the printing with an Indiegogo campaign, the delay has been in getting that ready. A friend has been helping us with the video (this process is a complete mystery to us), and once the editing is done we should be all set to launch the campaign. Thanks for being so patient!
