New to Galaxion? Wondering what’s going on? You can jump back to the beginning of this chapter or skip all the way back to the beginning of the whole story! Pressed for time? Why not try out this 15-page no-commitment short story instead and see what you think?
As you may know, this coming Saturday, May 2nd 2009, is Free Comic Book Day! This is the day you can walk in to your favourite comic shop for some wonderful free comics, and maybe drag along a friend or two and let ‘em try some of those free samples and see if they get hooked, too. But be sure to look out for this book, because there is a brand-new one-page Galaxion story in there! In colour! Woo!
Also, I will be at The Beguiling on that day from 12-3pm, to sign stuff and give away copies of my, um, “vintage” Galaxion comic books. Please drop by in you’re in the neighbourhood!
Yay spacey-shippy things! Lying in the grass exactly like bricks… do. With what looks like vending machines inside!
I’m thinking the Hiawatha didn’t do so well in the open air. Kind of impressive that it survived reentry and landing at all really.
Though since this is alt-New Zealand, there really ought to be some sheep wandering through, or the odd moa or something.
Woo! I really like the interior, it’s really different from anything you’ve done previously. Can’t wait to see more of the inside. And it looks like the crew shares my sentiments!
Vending machines… sheesh!
Maybe this is a stupid question. But if they are treating this as a first contact situation with an unknown planet… Then why aren’t they bringing their own air? Sure, the micro-organisms on a completely foreign planet are probably not sufficiently similar in their biochemistry to give them diseases. But probably isn’t something I’d like to bet my survey contact team on…
- Jake
@JakeS: Yes, especially since this planet has a biosphere that looks like Earth, which means compatible DNA is a high probability, and potentially had a human population wiped out by a world-ending catastrophe like, oh, how about biowarfare? Oops. Oh well, too late now.
@Tara: “Man, things have really gone downhill since IP implemented that new ‘pay your own way’ budget.” “Shut up and put your nickel in the slot already, I’m down to my last five minutes of oxygen.”
JakeS & Nate: Since they’re being this cautious, (I still don’t see any redshirts, have you heard from our union rep?) they may have deployed low atmosphere probes to take air, water, and soil samples. It’s also possible that they did that in their landing craft on the way down, before they disembarked without environment suits.
Tara: Look, there’s still chocolate in here. Clearly we’re dealing with a barbaric native culture, ma’am.
This remains one of my favorite web comics. I especially like the
artwork, the characters, and the quirky personalities.
My daughter likes it too!
Our only complaint: more + faster = would be better. My daughter plans
to “skip checking for updates for the whole summer” so that she can sit
down and read at least more than one or two pages at one sitting…..
I guess quality work cannot be rushed….
I dig the shading you’re using on the interior of the ship. Trying out a new technique?
@Baxter: “Didn’t anyone bring any loose change?”
@Corbin: Thank you! I have to agree with you– faster would be better. I haven’t figured out how to be faster, sadly. I’ll keep working at it!
@Stripey: Not so much a new technique as a continuation of the one I used for the Pathfinder story. My early attempts at using greytones were pretty horribleI I’m still learning the ways of Photoshop. Meanwhile, I plan to only trot out the greytones for times when I really need it (like for the dark interiors of crashed ships) and hope that it won’t look too out of place.
Photoshop takes some getting used to. . .but the tones are well worth the effort. Jenny’s work in “Zombie Hunters” is a good example.
Ah yes, I recall that picture of Zan taking apart the thingummy.
It looks much more effective now, though
Nate, Corbin & Stripey,
No need for rspirators etc assuming negative result on BioHazard Scans. (see page 100)
I see that the Hiawatha has the chupaqueso vending machines that apparently come standard on every webcomic spacecraft.
