There’s an old piece of advice in writing “Is this the most interesting part of your characters’ lives? If not, why aren’t you showing us that?”. I would imagine their slow crawl through space towards Myrad was fairly uneventful, so Tara jumped ahead a bit to when interesting things were happening in the story again. I could be wrong, though.

I think it is as if you were looking out from inside the view screen they are using. Notice the shape of the screens on the other side of the room.
