I know there’s a good lot of you very smart and alert readers who know what Zan means when he says “noise”, but if you’re like me and appreciate a reminder, I’ll suggest a quick skim of Chapter Nine.
I think important question here is: Does General Scavina Nelson realize what he meant by noise?
Probably. And will be wanting to speak with him about it again…later.
It looks like the Miesti drug has beneficial effects. This is getting more complex with each chapter.
Indeed! Seems like they’ve gained an entirely new sense. What we’ve seen up until now has basically been the shock of adjusting to the new input, but once they get some filters in place to block out unwanted “noise”, this could prove a mighty useful ability indeed.
…still, until they discover psychic earplugs, I doubt they’ll be comfortable in large crowds.
So the mind noise is there to stay huh? That’s interesting, especially since it seemed like not all the characters on not!Earth could still hear it after they’d had the drug in their system for a while….
Speculation: multiple doses attune you to the Miesti, and you lose most of the sensitivity to human brain noise. Low dosage, and/or a lack of nearby Miesti, attunes you to whatever brain noise is present.
The question is not so much what he means by “noise”; noise is noise, or so one would think. The question is what he means by the little “uh” he put in front of it. Me, I’m eager to see whether he just doesn’t want to bring up the whole “By the way I can read minds now” thing in this particular situation, or he’s actively trying to hide it.
And Scavina splits up the gang again! I wonder if there will be consequences for going off by herself again now that her help has arrived…
Fusella just sent the one guy?! Yeah, Scavina asked only for a Medtech, but couldn’t the captain of the ship have thought to sent at least a couple more? There is such a thing as anticipating needs.
It might actually depend on the area they are looking in. If it is cramped, really tight, or unstable then keeping the number of moving bodies down to a minimum is key. Once they have assessed the dangers and mitigated them, then more people can come in and help in excavations and what not.
On the other hand, if many of the engineering crew was hurt or incapacitated then you don’t want, say, the navigator running around down there; he could accidentally hit a switch of some sort and cause another problem. Then why the med-tech? Because he heals people (+5 HP healed per semester of medical studies), a truly necessary skill in search and RESCUE.
I also think that the BOOM may not have been isolated to Engineering.
