Con appearance annoucement! I will be at RavenCon in Richmond, VA April 5th and 6th. (Which is to say, I’ll be there for the Friday and the Saturday, but not the Sunday.) I’ll be sitting in on a few panels but I won’t have an official space in the dealers room this year. However, that doesn’t mean I won’t have any books with me! If you are considering attending the show and are interested in some Galaxion books or comics or original art, drop me an email at tara ~dot!~ tallan ~at!~ gmail ~dot!~ com, and we can arrange a meet-up at the show.
Also, I posted something new in the blog last week, but you may have missed it since it was on Thursday. Supurpleous!
Aaawww. I hate to see this week’s episode just sitting there without a single comment in return for your effort Tara.
So … That’s an odd analogy for Vanguarthe. What possible experience would he have with signal beacons? Is there anyone left to signal to? I will say that I am ever more impressed with his intellect and leadership. He takes responsibility for everything (even though he was presented with a fait accompli upon his return to base) and suggests a reasoned response and call to action..He may have saved Patty from a lynching or equivalent while assisting General Nelson and the landing party in their mission. Wottaguy.
The original beacons were signal fires lit at the tops of prominent hills — I suppose you could consider one on a high enough hill to be a “beacon in the sky”.
I realized actually have an answer to this analogy thing! It was only a couple generations ago that Vanguarthe’s world suffered the disaster that left it in ruins. There are, in fact, still remnants of technology around (which is how they light their underground home, for example). So while beacons like that might not actually still exist, it still does in the language… much the same way we might talk about “getting into a rut”, even though the wagon wheel ruts in the road that were (I think) the origin of this phrase are mostly a thing of the past. Or, perhaps, “going on and on like a broken record.”
