Chapter 4 p. 108
This is probably one of these things that will only be obvious to me, but I took some inspiration for the design of the Hiawatha bridge from another famous sci-fi ship. Can anyone guess which one?
This Friday and Saturday, June 12-13th 2009, I will be in Chelsea, Michigan for Kids Read Comics! Drop by and say hi, and bring along your kids. I’m bringing mine!
See below for some Galaxion News!

Okay, so what ship is the inspiration?
June 9th, 2009 at 5:00 am
Hm… Either the Yamato or the Macross. My memory of both is sketchy but I figure it would be one of those two.
June 9th, 2009 at 5:53 am
Hmm.. looks like a bit like the Enterprise [NX-01]…. one thing that puzzles me though, from an engineering/design standpoint, is why are the ceilings so high on the Hiawatha?
I mean, the bridge has to be about 18 to 20 feet high, and about that wide…which is odd.
June 9th, 2009 at 7:12 am
Clearly the Yamato.
June 9th, 2009 at 10:31 am
It is DEFINITELY the Yamato from Starblazers. Took me a second, but the command chair gave it away.
June 9th, 2009 at 11:17 am
The whole strip design seems very Yamato-ey to me. :p
But I’m guessing the bridge is Yamato, too. Here’s a (small) image to compare: http://www.starblazers.com/images/newsletter/december04/Rebirth-7.jpg

It has been much too long since my viewing of ‘Starblazers’ (1084.) My thoughts were the ship from Forbidden Planet. As to the ceiling height, it is a typical filming standard, so the flyaway sections can be removed for those ‘really neat-o shots.’
As to myself, were I building a ship I would want such heights in the bridge, and other places. Having spent the last twenty plus years mainly cooped up in a building with eight foot ceilings, the ability NOT to bang my head on some hanging object is very desirable. I’m 5′9″ for the record.
June 9th, 2009 at 12:50 pm
Oh, wow! Soon as I saw the bridge, I so thought Yamato/Argo! The windows give it away.
June 9th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
I would have to say the Andromeda Ascendant. I know the window configuration is different as the Andromeda has view screen, But the SDF-1 did not not have battle station behind the Captain they were in front at the windows. Not sure about the Yamato, because I haven’t seen that series yet, but it could be.
June 9th, 2009 at 1:12 pm
Scratch my last. After looking at Sripey’s link, I would also have to say the Yamato.
June 9th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
Yup, it was the Yamato/Argo! I’ve been a fan for so long that I jumped at the chance to do a subtle (or maybe not so subtle?) homage. For those of you who know the series– does it choke you up the way it does me to see it in such a state?
@silicon: I know, high ceilings doesn’t really make much sense. The Galaxion is really supposed to be unusual in the fleet for having such large open spaces, while the standard ship designs in both TerSA and IP are more economically designed, but then I had this idea to do the Yamato thing and… well, I’m just gonna let that slide for the moment!
June 10th, 2009 at 12:10 am
Heh, I was thinking Event: Horizon all the way. Probably just because of all the damage. So long as there’s no recording of a guy holding his own eyeballs, I’m happy!
June 10th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
Ack! Did her husband take the thing which went right through the window in the face? I hope not. For some weird reason, I really would like to see that hope-filled, well-meaning guy as having survived. ^_^
June 10th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
@Alec. That would be too much “shades of Serenity” if he did!
June 11th, 2009 at 7:28 am
@Tara ok, I see the resemblance now…and I guess artistic licence trumps engineering design, at least for comics! [wouldn’t want to try that in real life]. But engineering aside..it looks *cool* !
Oh, and I take your point Kenoscope..I’m 5′11″ … there are some places I think should issue hard-hats at the door.
June 11th, 2009 at 8:28 pm
Tara, that looks awesome! Must’ve been fun inflicting ‘damage’ on that interior. I would’ve expected the place to be covered in cobwebs… wait do they have spiders there?
June 12th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
No question, that’s the bridge of the Yamato from Yamato/Star Blazers.
June 12th, 2009 at 6:29 pm
Just read the whole thing in one sitting, and yes it’s obviously the Yamato. “We’re off to outer spaaace….”
June 15th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
@speearr They probably couldn’t get in through the sealed doors, or something like that.
