I am suspicious of his sudden change of mind.
That was my first thought too. Maybe I read too many comics with suspicious characters.
I think he is about to give them the WORST job that requires EVA, hence the smirks.

I think the sudden change of mind has to do with him realizing the effort is as much about moral as it is about helping out. I am hoping for good manager skills rather than suspicious motives!
What I’m afraid of is that he is about to turn this into an object lesson and make a show of humiliating them. That what my imagination suggests although I don’t think he would do that. What I’m hoping for is that he’ll just throw them at some terrible job.
Do we now get to laugh at the predicament Aria got her group into? “Signs point to ‘Yes’.”
Just binged this whole comic today and it is so good. Great Sci Fi and the story and characters are so amazing.
