Lastly, I have a request to all of you readers who have been so helpful playing editor for me… if you go back to the last page, does the transition to this page work? It’s a jump in time, right, and I’m skipping straight to the action with the Survey Contact Team down on the planet (although the dialogue box is a continuation of the previous scene). The idea was that Scavina was about to reveal to the rest of the people around the table the visual of the Hiawatha, but now that I look at it again I’m not sure if the last panel on that page is somehow misleading. What do you think? Does it work OK?

I have a bunch of things (good things!) to tell you this week but it was too long to put here in the page notes so see the blog post. But let me just quickly point you to a couple of things: first, you must go see the Galaxion cameo at the webcomic Maskerman by Dennis Michels! Thank you so much, Dennis! Second, Galaxion was reviewed at the blog Tangents Reviews, which was a wonderful surprise. Go have a look, and be sure to check out the other thoughtful webcomic reviews while you’re there!

To anyone who may be visiting the comic for the first time– or for the first time in a long time– and would like to know what the heck is going on here, may I suggest the synopsis on the New Readers page? Or, if you’re feeling brave, you could try Fusella’s (Extremely Opinionated) “Story So Far”.

The scenes on the wall screens were a bit of an experiment: I drew them all on a separate piece of paper (mainly so I could be lazy and cut-n-paste in the second panel) and then inked it with a crowquill dip pen, instead of the usual brush and Rapidograph pen (or Micron felt-tip) combo. I like the idea of using a crowquill, but I’m still a bit nervous about using them on the page. This method made a good compromise. But between the challenging perspective and the wee little scenes of ruin, that first panel was almost the death of me.

Eh, I usually prefer to do all the art in the traditional way– on paper– but sometimes I have to cave and admit Photoshop can do it better than I can. If I’d had a little more experience with the program, I might have tried a similar effect way back in the beginning, for the bridge’s holo projector (which is basically the same thing built into the briefing room table here, but on a larger scale). Maybe I’ll try it next time the plot takes us back to the bridge, what do you think?

OK folks, first the bad news– I won’t be able to post a “First Friday” update this month. *sobs* I can keep my regular updates going, but after last month (and the month before, actually), I need to rebuild my buffer. I will put up something on Friday, though. I dunno what, yet– something from the dark recesses of my files? Or… if anyone has a hankering to make some fan art, I suppose this would be a good time….

The deal is supposed to be that when you say “first the bad news” you follow it up with some good news, but I really don’t have anything in that department! Yeah, that’s my January in a nutshell. But I’ve got a request for you! I’m going to try really really hard to get that collected volume of the Galaxion webcomic out this summer, so if you spotted any more errors in the pages so far that need fixing, please let me know!

Oh, there’s Fusella! Welcome back to the plot, dear, I know how– ahem– patient you’ve been.

I could also note for any Zan fans out there, we’ll be seeing a lot more of him from this point on.

Here we have another one of those pages that really suffers from page-a-week publishing. Here it is out of context, and add to that the fact that we still don’t know what Darvin’s complaining about, and it just falls flat. But it’ll help if you go back to the beginning of the scene and read the last three pages all in a row.

Also, I have moved the Pathfinder story to its new home, between Chapters 2 and 3. It should read a little more smoothly there.
