Oh, dear… what if the “survivor” leader is also a symbiote? Been a long time since I have read this from the beginning, so I may be missing something, but interesting if true.

or as you say, a faction within the Rautani (that’s what I’m leaning towards myself… at least Zan had his door propped up, but Aria was just left to sleep in the expectation that the venom would last substantially longer)

Great post! Just one thing though, the Miesti gave no signs of having such advanced plan at the stage when they were interrogating Aria, the lack of security is probably due to their small numbers and lack of control over the Rautani.

One big reason to “hash it out” now it is what @cookie pointed out in the last paragraph of hir comment above – there is more than just their own personal safety to consider.

Get back to (relative) safety first, then hash out the true nature of the Miesti. That would be my advice to Zan.

Sure there’s a split here, but there’s no reason it can’t be resolved in time.

So what did Zan notice? The readers didn’t see his interrogation session so we have to guess. The Miesti speech pattern comes in waves, and they refer to water terms in their discourse – “she perceives our waves” “weir and wash” “she breaches us” etc. Strange for clearly airborne creatures. Patty started speaking in the wave pattern as she grew slowly more affected by the venom http://galaxioncomics.com/1-comic/book-3/chapter-8/title-236/ . Zan did too before he sobered up http://galaxioncomics.com/1-comic/book-3/chapter-9/title-276/ . Aria with her unexpected reaction to the venom never did. But Zan would not know that, and it is not clear if he understood the Miesti private conversation.

So what else? The fact that their little demonstration was not very well attended? The ambiguous so far unexplained comment by persons unknown? http://galaxioncomics.com/1-comic/book-3/chapter-9/title-269/. We the readers know that Aria and Zan’s getaway appears to be monitored by someone. That someone may not be Miesti-controlled. Perhaps there is more than one faction among the Rutani? Jeff Nelson did lock down the Hiawatha core pretty thoroughly to prevent stranded Hiawatha crew from resurrecting it.

On the other hand, perhaps the Miesti planned Aria and Zan’s escape. That would explain the lack of even rudimentary security precautions. That could very well be what Zan noticed. In that case, they are likely bait to lure in a rescue team. The Miesti seem to really want that ship in orbit. Perhap’s Zan’s SOS was a bad idea…
