@Insectoid: Yes, there was a reason… if he’d been a navigator on the Hiawatha’s bridge in this version, he probably wouldn’t have fared too well…

Hmm… I haven’t read “Better Zombies”, though I am a VERY frequent visitor at Tor.com (mostly due to the awesome Wheel of Time Re-Read there). I’ll check it out.
